Limb Difference Awareness Month - Client Spotlight
Meet Juliana:
Juliana's story:
My name is Juliana and I have been a left below knee amputee since September 23, 2015. However, this journey towards an elective amputation began on March 11, 2004. I slipped on a patch of black ice which resulted in a very serious break to my left ankle. Unfortunately, this was not handled properly and I ended up with surgeries in Charlottetown, Moncton, and Halifax. I had a fused ankle for 11 years but finally, I was in so much chronic pain, that I made the decision to amputate.
My amputation has made many more activities possible for me. I enjoy many activities including swimming, hiking, snowshoeing, Essentrics and Pilates. I try to keep in shape however I can. I am a retired teacher and I did go back for the final three years of my career.
I have tremendous appreciation for what prosthetic clinicians and technicians can do for their clients. I have been fortunate to have a daughter, Alyson, who is a prosthetic technician and is now here on PEI. She and Mitch at API have been wonderful to me for the last six years. I am so grateful for those who advocate on behalf of amputees. I believe that an amputee deserves the tools (legs) they need to lead a full and active life. I also have tremendous appreciation for the War Amps for their generosity and support with this.
